A grassroots football club that was facing closure due to rising costs and dwindling funding has been saved after a remarkable community fundraising campaign raised over £150,000 in just two weeks.
Milton Park Rangers, based in the West Midlands, had announced last month that it would be forced to close unless it could raise £120,000 to cover essential costs including pitch maintenance, equipment, and insurance. The club, which runs teams for children aged six to sixteen, had been a fixture in the local community for over 40 years.
The Campaign
The fundraising campaign, organised by parents and local volunteers, exceeded its initial target within 10 days. Donations poured in from former players, local businesses, and even rival clubs. The total raised now stands at £152,000, providing the club with financial stability for at least the next two years.
Club chairman David Miller said: We are overwhelmed by the generosity of our community. This club means so much to so many people, and to see everyone come together like this has been truly humbling. We will use every penny to ensure that local children can continue to play football.
Impact on the Community
The club has over 200 registered players and provides a vital outlet for physical activity and social development. For many children in the area, it is the only organised sports activity available.
Sarah Thompson, whose two sons play for the club, said: This club is a lifeline for our family. The boys have made friends, learned teamwork, and stayed active. Without it, they would be spending their evenings on screens. We cannot thank everyone who donated enough.
The Wider Picture
The club's fundraising success highlights the challenges facing grassroots sports in the UK. Many community sports clubs operate on tight budgets and are vulnerable to rising costs. The Football Association has acknowledged the issue and has committed to increasing support for grassroots football.
Future Plans
With the immediate financial crisis averted, the club is now planning to invest in new facilities and expand its offering to include girls' teams and disability football. The committee is also exploring options for more sustainable long-term funding.
