A section of the M6 motorway has been closed in both directions after a fire severely damaged a bridge, with National Highways warning that disruption could last for several days.
The fire broke out beneath the motorway in the early hours of Wednesday morning, involving a vehicle that had collided with the bridge structure. The resulting fire caused significant damage to the bridge supports, rendering the structure unsafe for traffic.
Extent of the Closure
The closure affects approximately five miles of the M6 between junctions 15 and 17. Diversions are in place via local roads, but these are already experiencing significant congestion. National Highways has advised drivers to avoid the area if possible.
Duty operations manager for National Highways, Mark Stevens, said: This is a significant incident that will require extensive structural assessment and repair work. We cannot provide a timeline for reopening until structural engineers have completed their inspections.
Travel Advice
Commuters have been advised to work from home where possible, or to use alternative routes. Rail operators have laid on additional services to help accommodate displaced travellers. Local authorities have suspended road works in the area to maximise capacity on diversion routes.
Structural Assessment
Structural engineers are on site assessing the damage. The initial assessment suggests that the bridge will require significant repairs before it can be reopened to traffic. In the worst case, a full replacement of the bridge deck may be necessary.
Economic Impact
The closure is expected to have a significant economic impact, with the M6 being one of the busiest motorways in the country. The Freight Transport Association has warned that supply chains could be affected if the closure is prolonged.
Investigation
Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Early indications suggest that a mechanical failure in the vehicle may have been responsible. The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries and is assisting with the investigation.
Alternative Routes
Drivers are advised to use the A50 and A500 as alternative routes for north-south journeys, or to use the M1 and M42 where possible. Real-time traffic information is available through the National Highways website and mobile app.
