A new government grant scheme offering up to £25,000 for small businesses has opened for applications, with the aim of boosting innovation and creating jobs in local communities across the UK.

The Small Business Growth Fund, as the scheme is known, provides grants of between £5,000 and £25,000 to small and medium-sized enterprises that can demonstrate a clear plan for growth, innovation, or job creation. The scheme is being delivered through local authorities and is open to businesses in all sectors.

Who Can Apply

Eligible businesses must have fewer than 50 employees and an annual turnover of less than £10 million. Priority will be given to businesses in disadvantaged areas and those operating in sectors identified as strategic priorities by the government, including green technology, digital innovation, and advanced manufacturing.

How It Works

Applications are assessed by local authority panels, which will evaluate each business on the strength of its growth plan, the feasibility of its proposals, and its potential contribution to the local economy. Successful applicants will receive funding in two instalments, with the second payment contingent on meeting agreed milestones.

Small Business Minister Gareth Thomas said: Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. This fund is designed to give them the support they need to grow, innovate, and create jobs. I encourage every eligible business to apply.

Case Study

Maria Gonzalez, who runs a small bakery in Birmingham, is planning to apply. She said: I want to expand my business, buy new equipment, and hire two additional staff members. This grant would make that possible. Without it, I would have to wait years to grow.

Application Process

Applications can be submitted online through the government's business support portal. The application requires a business plan, financial projections, and details of how the grant would be used. Local authorities are offering workshops and one-to-one support to help businesses prepare their applications.

The scheme is initially funded for two years with a budget of £250 million. The government has indicated that additional funding may be made available if demand is high and the scheme proves effective.
