UK staycation bookings have surged 18% for summer 2026 compared with the same period last year, according to data from leading holiday rental platforms, as British holidaymakers continue to favour domestic breaks amid rising overseas travel costs.
The trend, which accelerated during the pandemic, shows no sign of slowing. Booking data from Airbnb, Sykes Cottages, and Hoseasons reveals that August is already 82% booked in many popular destinations, with coastal areas in Cornwall, Devon, and Norfolk among the most sought-after locations.
Where People Are Going
Cornwall remains the most popular staycation destination for the fifth consecutive year, accounting for nearly one in five domestic holiday bookings. The Lake District and the Scottish Highlands have also seen significant increases, with bookings up 24% and 22% respectively. Emerging destinations include the Northumberland coast, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and the Yorkshire Dales.
Staycationers are also booking longer breaks. The average stay has increased from 4.2 nights in 2025 to 5.1 nights in 2026, suggesting that holidaymakers are committing to domestic travel more fully rather than treating it as a shorter alternative to overseas trips.
Why the Shift Is Continuing
Several factors are driving the sustained demand for UK holidays. The cost of overseas travel has risen significantly, with flight prices up 15% year on year and package holiday costs increasing by 12%. The weakening of the pound against the euro and dollar has made overseas destinations more expensive for British travellers.
At the same time, the quality of UK accommodation and attractions has improved markedly. Investment in the domestic tourism sector has led to a proliferation of high-end glamping sites, luxury cottages with hot tubs and home cinemas, and boutique hotel openings in rural locations.
The Experience Economy
Staycationers are spending more on experiences during their breaks. Activity bookings — including surfing lessons, foraging courses, vineyard tours, and guided hiking — have increased by 35% year on year. Food and drink tourism is also booming, with bookings at Michelin-starred restaurants in the countryside and farm-to-table dining experiences particularly popular.
Impact on Local Communities
The staycation boom has brought significant economic benefits to rural and coastal communities. VisitBritain estimates that domestic tourism will contribute £87 billion to the UK economy in 2026, supporting over 2 million jobs. However, the influx of visitors has also created challenges, including pressure on housing, infrastructure, and the environment in popular destinations.
Looking Ahead
Industry experts expect the staycation trend to remain strong for the foreseeable future. While overseas travel has rebounded, the habits formed during the pandemic have persisted, and many families have discovered the appeal of UK holidays. As climate concerns grow, domestic travel is also increasingly seen as a more sustainable choice.
