The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for wind and rain as Storm Bert is expected to bring severe conditions across large parts of the UK, with forecasters warning of significant travel disruption and potential flooding.

Storm Bert, the fifth named storm of the season, is expected to make landfall on the south-west coast early Thursday morning before moving north-eastwards across the country. Wind speeds of up to 80 mph are forecast in coastal areas, with gusts of 50 to 60 mph expected inland.

Weather Warnings

The amber warning covers most of southern England, the Midlands, and Wales, where the worst of the weather is expected. A separate yellow warning for rain has been issued for northern England and Scotland, where up to 80mm of rainfall is possible in some areas.

Travel Disruption

National Rail has warned passengers to expect significant disruption, with speed restrictions likely on many routes. Several ferry operators have already cancelled sailings, and major bridges may be closed if wind speeds exceed safety thresholds.

Airports have advised passengers to check with their airlines before travelling, as delays and cancellations are expected. Motorists have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the worst of the weather.

Flood Risk

The Environment Agency has issued flood warnings for several rivers in the south-west and Midlands, where the combination of heavy rain and already saturated ground increases the risk of flooding. Flood defences have been deployed in vulnerable areas.

Preparing for the Storm

The Met Office has advised residents in affected areas to secure loose items in gardens and to check on vulnerable neighbours. Emergency services have activated their severe weather plans and are preparing to respond to incidents.

What to Expect

The storm is expected to peak during Thursday afternoon and evening before gradually easing on Friday. However, conditions will remain unsettled through the weekend, with further showers and strong winds expected.

Staying Safe

The public is advised to stay away from coastal areas during the storm, where large waves and strong winds pose a significant risk. Motorists should avoid driving through floodwater, and everyone should stay informed through official weather updates.
