The Met Office has confirmed that the record-breaking June heatwave gripping the UK is expected to break this weekend as a cold front moves in from the Atlantic, bringing thunderstorms, heavy rain, and a dramatic drop in temperatures of up to 15C.
Temperatures reached an unprecedented 36.4C in Somerset on Thursday, but forecasters now predict a significant change in weather patterns from Saturday afternoon onwards. The cold front will begin pushing into western parts of the UK from Saturday morning, reaching London and the South East by late afternoon.
The Met Office has issued yellow thunderstorm warnings covering much of England and Wales from Saturday through Monday. Chief Meteorologist Paul Gundersen said there is a marked change on the way with a return to more typical June conditions.
Temperatures are forecast to plummet from the mid-30s to the low 20s within 24 hours. London will drop from 35.8C to 21C by Sunday. Beyond the weekend, the outlook suggests more unsettled conditions with a mix of sunshine and showers.
